| The History Of Hammocks The hammock has a history that dates back a thousand years. They are originally from Central America, including places like Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico. They were also found in South America in places such as Ecuador and Brazil. It is said that the Mayan Indians created them, the web design is one of the most comfortable and creative of all of the hammocks. Early hammocks were woven from the bark of a tree called the Hamack. Sisal was later used because it was easier to find and the fibers could be softened. In the mid-nineteenth century cotton began to be used. Trade routes between Central and Southern America brought the hammock to more and more people. As it traveled the world the indigenous people used local materials to make them which resulted in a variety of styles. The cloth and fabric style of Brazil came to be and the rope and cord hammocks were created. When Columbus was on his journey to find the New World he stopped in the Bahamas where the natives were found to be using hammocks and he took some back to Europe with him. These were found to be very convenient for sleeping on long voyages on ships by the sailors. They provided ventilation and a comfortable nights rest. Britain incorporated them into their prison system in the 19th century as standard sleeping quarters to save space. They created instant sleeping space and could be easily moved about. In the late 1800s the hammock became popular in North America. A wider version was created which made them widely popular. Today sales are in the millions and are sold to people as beds and everyday backyard lounging furniture. Around the world there are millions of people that use this style of hammock bed, they can be found in Northern, Central and Southern Americas, the South Pacific, Philippines, China, and Africa. |
